Anyway, here's the email you were supposed to get on Friday, with the scores already filled in for yesterday's game:


Well hey there, everyone! I'm back with a new weekend's worth of football Squares! I've got a pair of games that might just have some relevance to some folks out there, so let's take a look at what we've got:

Boston College at Cincinnati — Saturday, 3:30 ET / 12:30 PT, FOX

Both of these teams tore themselves down to the studs over the offseason, and Saturday afternoon is the first look anybody gets at what they built. Boston College went 2-10 last year, so Bill O'Brien hired a general manager, worked the portal hard, and handed the offense to Mason McKenzie — a Division II transfer from Saginaw Valley State who ran and threw for a combined three thousand yards last fall and now gets to start his big-stage career on FOX. Cincinnati has quietly improved its record two years running and brought in thirty-plus new faces and Georgia Southern transfer JC French IV to keep it going. Nobody knows what either of these teams actually is yet, including the teams — which is the fun of it. Both of them walk in undefeated and genuinely believing this is the year it turns.

For the first time since these two started playing each other in 1900, the Apple Cup opens the season instead of closing it — Thanksgiving dinner served in July. Washington arrives off one of the strangest offseasons anybody's had in a while: twenty-one players into the transfer portal, and quarterback Demond Williams Jr. announcing he was leaving days after signing a deal to stay, then changing his mind in the face of public outcry and potential lawsuits. Even after all that, they've got enough talent to start the season ranked 17th. Washington State is running the reinvention play it's been running for years now — new coach, new quarterback, another fresh start. The Cougars may not be the pass-happy team we all remember, but they'll be determined to start off at the top of their new upstart conference, putting Washington's rebuilt squad to an immediate test.
