Men's Elite 8

Well howdy, folks!

Hey, we got a couple of absolutely fantastic games tonight to finish off the men's side of the Sweet 16. But it's getting on the late side, so I hope you'll forgive me if I just get you up to date on our four Elite 8 matchups this weekend.

Men's Elite 8 - Saturday, 3:09 Pacific / 6:09 Eastern: Iowa (9) vs. Illinois (3)
Illinois has been dominant all tournament, controlling every game on the way to the Elite Eight. Iowa has looked shakier, but also more dramatic, coming back from a double-digit deficit against Nebraska in the Sweet 16 and pulling off two genuine stunners to get here. The Hawkeyes haven't been to the Elite Eight since 1987, and Illinois beat them by six in January — but that game was a lot closer to a blowout than the final score suggested, and Iowa has been a completely different team since the tournament started. Bench forward Alvaro Folgueiras has been the spark in every single game. Saturday in Houston is a chance for Iowa to prove the run is real. Illinois is betting it isn't.

Men's Elite 8 - Saturday, 5:49 Pacific / 8:49 Eastern: Arizona (1) vs. Purdue (2)
It's been 25 years since Arizona has been to the Final Four, following a historic run of success throughout the '80s and '90s. This Wildcats team certainly looks the part, though, boasting a 35-2 record and having dominated the tournament so far. Purdue is a different kind of challenge, led by three seniors who were part of the Boilermaker team that reached the championship game in 2024. But their road to the Elite Eight hasn't been easy — the question is whether they're just that deep and resilient, or running on fumes.

Men's Elite 8 - Sunday, 11:15 Pacific / 2:15 Eastern: Michigan (1) vs. Tennessee (6)
Michigan just handled Alabama in a high-scoring shootout to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 2021 — Yaxel Lendeborg was the story, putting up a monster game to carry the Wolverines through. Tennessee's style is 180 degrees different from Alabama. The Volunteers don't beat you with flashy offense — they beat you on the boards, grinding teams down with a physicality that's been relentless all tournament. They've made the Elite Eight three years in a row and are still searching for their first Final Four. Michigan has the size and efficiency to match them. The question Sunday in Chicago is whether the Volunteers can make this ugly enough to keep the Wolverines uncomfortable.

Men's Elite 8 - Sunday, 2:05 Pacific / 5:05 Eastern: Duke (1) vs. UConn (2)
So, hey, stop me if you've heard this before, but Duke is the overall number one seed, and they've got yet another generational talent — this time it's Cameron Boozer — leading them. In spite of all that, the Blue Devils got a genuine scare from St. John's on Friday before holding on late. UConn got past Michigan State in a finish that went down to the final seconds, with Tarris Reed Jr. and Alex Karaban making the pressure free throws that sealed it. Here's the uncomfortable fact for Duke fans: the last four times UConn reached the Sweet 16, they won the national championship. Duke is the better team on paper, but so far, UConn hasn't seemed to care too much what the paper says.

All right, that'll just about do it for me - I need to get some sleep. But I'll be back tomorrow night with a preview of the women's Elite 8. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the games, everyone!

Best,

Chris
